A general thread to post questions, ask advice, provide guidance, and all sorts of fun things related to PnP character creation and development.
So, I'm building a level 7 goblin barbarian, specifically a Feral Gnasher. This is for Pathfinder. Focused on biting jerks, grappling with lockjaw, and immobilizing them. I have Throw Anything, and will be pretty baller with improvised weapons. Looking for some feat suggestions and other build advice. If I grapple with Lockjaw, can I keep biting and maintain the grapple?
The way the rule is written, it takes a standard action to maintain the grapple, but yes you can do bite damage to him. Now, this is where I need to think. Normally, if you have to use a standard action, you wouldn't get multiple attacks. Lockjaw says you can use your other attacks, which would make sense when using a full round action (like your first attack, assuming you don't move). Along this line, a very important feat would be improved grapple, so you don't provoke attacks of opportunity.
What I would say in this case: If you are adjacent (or within a 5' step) you can use your full attack action to claw/claw/bite. If you have Lockjaw up, the bite will automatically begin a grapple. From that point on, you can maintain your bite, as a standard action, maintaining the grapple and doing bite damage per round. Though you need to roll a grapple check each round, with a +4 from Lockjaw, and a +5 if the opponent does not break the grapple. Keep in mind, you do have a size penalty (-1 or -2, I have to look). Improved grapple would be if you wanted to bite and hold on as a grapple attack without provoking an attack of opportunity. Lockjaw enables the bite (or whatever) with the grab ability which makes the grapple a free action to initiate (but not maintain) and does not provoke. However, you can only use this on creatures equal to or smaller than yourself. So, small children and lower.
Not as a Gnasher, I can grapple a size larger (medium), and eventually up to Huge. Thanks for the advice! Will keep planning. Is there any way for a gobbie to get natural claw attacks?
probably a spell or magic item is the most likely source of claw attacks, otherwise I'd just use small melee weapons/armor spikes (punching daggers or star knife would probably be best, also make sure you take two weapon fighting feat if you're going to do this)
Don't know about Pathfinder, but in 3.5, Sharkskin Armour is a light class and gives the wearer both armour spikes and spiked gauntlets. That could be an option.
Level 7 Goblin Feral Gnasher finished, BAM! Armor spikes didn't work, since they require proficiency, and I would have to choose between them and my bite for damage. Managed a 1d8 bite, for a small character.
ends up accomplishing the same thing, all in all a good deal! (actually, bite may be better than spikes for damage, doesn't bite get full str bonus?)
yeah, 1.5 is what I consider to be full str bonus, as if you were using a 2h weapon XD, though apparently if you combine that attack with an actual weapon it becomes an offhand and loses the 1x str bonus somehow? wonder if he could take up chewing crystal as a compulsion, not sure he'd like to have his teeth removed for crystal replacements... crystal braces? lol
Yeah, that's the whole natural primary to natural secondary deal. I'm imagining him chewing through doors and walls.
I'm thinking for the purposes of combat with the devils, I doubt he wants to have his teeth enchanted to be a good aligned weapon
I just though of something. Could you imagine an octopus with flurry of blows? That's a lot of limbs...
An Octopus Monk was a thought I had, the first one, actually. Then I thought... hm, this could get ridic.
information about the campaign we're involved in, such as the use of a certain naturally (supposedly) forming crystal that is anathema to evil outsiders. Otherwise their DR is pretty rediculous unless your weapons are silver or good aligned (I suppose you could cap all your teeth in silver too >.>) We've determined that the crystal works just fine in powder form delivered via grenade XD All of this would have to be communicated in game of course, I'm mostly just theory crafting (also, in the part of the world we're in, silver is illegal, so walking into town with silver teeth might just be the most painful thing your character ever attempts XD)
I don't know, pouring molten silver into his mouth to coat his teeth could be pretty painful in itself He'd probably try to eat the crystals, if they smelled good. I don't suppose "Eldrich Claw" would suffice? I could pick that up next time I get a feat.
