Ok, I know we have had a bit of talk on mead and beers and a number of people here rather enjoy said beverages, but does anyone home brew? I'm a few weeks from heading home after 18months on the road and have been itching to finally give it a shot over the summer. Hopefully there are some others on here that can share their experiences, if not this will end up being documentation to my likely failures at it.
A guy I'm working with lately is really big into the home brewing. He has really gotten me interested in it as well. He recommended a few sites where he gets his supplies/ideas from. http://www.northernbrewer.com/ http://www.rebelbrewer.com/ http://www.midwestsupplies.com/
If I had the space I would without a second thought. My wife has also encouraged me to. However, because it does require a bit of space to do properly and our current living setup is limited on space, I will have to wait until we buy a house.
*nods* I'm right there with you Taake. Although, if I could be bothered to get off my ass and clear the junk out of the living room closet, I'd have enough space to rack a few bottles of mead. I just need motivation. Oh, right. Sweet, Sweet booze...hmm...
I'm trying to get my sugar ant problem under control first. Little bastards need to eat that borax faster...
Ya know... when I tried that approach for the maggot problem in my bait bucket, it didn't end so well...
I do a fair bit of home brewing. Are you just interested in making mead? That's all I make at the moment (specifically melomels).
Looking at doing at least a mead and a beer to start with, thinking a vanilla mead and a wheat beer for the summer. Do you have any recommendations for reading up on beer and mead making? Also failing at finding a local shop where do you recommend going for online orders? I'm going to have to spend the next week researching what I need and get it ordered, these are great to give ideas of what all is out there.
And for anyone with around $4500 laying around you could always buy this: http://www.fermentarium.com/featured/williamswarn-personal-brewery/ It's like a coffee machine, except for brewing beer.
Oooh, shiny! I'm currently hunting down a supply of cheap local honey, and will be hitting the shop to get my carboys and airlocks and shiz. My boss is actually giving me some food-grade cleaner that he has way too much of from his beer-making to get me started as well.
Brewmasters, Phil would like your feedback on a mead project he's currently running! http://www.nogutsnogalaxy.net/forum/index.php/topic,850.0.html
Just saw the thread. I've been home brewing for a couple of years now. I mainly make Beer but have also done cider and Mead. Currently in Glass: 5 Gallons of Lambic 2 Gallons of Belgian Tripel 2 Gallons of Mead (have something like 5 or six cases worth of previous batches bottled in my garage so I felt it was time for some stuff that takes longer) Will probably be doing 5 Gallons of an English style Brown Ale in the next week or so.
I just kegged 5 gallons of a suped up Honey Weizen last weekend, kegged an American Brown Ale this weekend (5 gal), and I have 5 gal of Porter in Secondary and 5 gal of the suped up Honey Weizen in secondary as well. I plan on brewing a Black IPA in the next weekend or two.
Sounds like you and I similar tastes. I haven't made the jump into Kegging just yet. If my Unit ends up deploying to the Sandbox next year I'll probably make the plunge when I get back since I'm planning on doing a bunch of Barleywine/Burton Ale type monsters that will need 12-18 month primaries while I'm gone.
I'd love to do some longterm projects, but my family and friends don't have the patience. lol We had a birthday party and tapped both Kegs on Sunday (yeah, all 10 gallons).
