been playing it in closed beta and now beta 2 for a while. Once you get the hang of the controls, its quite awesome even in beta form. not much to do yet, but its damn pretty and fun. much better with a joystick.
there is zero hand holding in this game. you are literally tossed into the deep end and told to live or die. its refreshing to see a game do that these days with all the theme park styled games. the flight mechanics are another point that some will love.. and others will hate. the ships have mass and turn rates are nerfed for yaw. this is a roll and pitch setup and Elite makes no apology's for it. but it is so satisfying when you learn it and then get on someones 6 and know that your going to win the fight because YOU made it happen. however there are maneuvers that will allow you to escape if someone has out maneuvered you initially. Missions in this game (so far) are pretty much limited to "deliver this" or find and kill this guy(s). the kill missions however doesn't tell you where the target is. you actually have to hunt them down, which can be a tad bit frustrating unless you like that open ended style. I figure the 55 system limit at this time is to allow enough room for the influx of new players while still allowing Frontier to stress test the code. I am currently doing some trade runs through a 3 system route, that allows me to conserve my fuel and make credits so I can buy newer better ( in my opinion) weapons. then i'll switch over to near exclusive combat for my cash. they have introduced comms in this version, both text and voice, although I have yet to set mine up. This is still very much a Beta, the features while already rich are not fully implemented and the systems are limited, so unless you really want to test it and gain some experience in the mechanics I would say to wait until the gamma phase ( basically open beta at a reduced price) its been speculated that Gamma will probably appear in September which is the 30th anniversary of the original Elite. with the final release probably in December. ( this is all speculation and subject to change)
This game has certainly come a long way since I took a look at it a year ago. Gets me more hungry for Star Citizen.
there are a few single crew ships. the Sidewinder (a solo scout ship, also the starter ship) the Eagle ( a dedicated dogfighter) the "Hauler" (a small hauler with a single hardpoint) and I think the Viper is a solo ship as well ( its a heavy dogfighter) I think every other ship is a multi-crewed ship. in the first full release , it is planned for a single person to control all aspects of the ship themselves. later they plan to have crew members required to make full use of the larger ships, at that point NPC's will be used to fill out the crew. then later after that they will allow PC's to be able to make up the crew. Crew positions currently planed are Co-pilot, Gunners, Engineers, Assault teams ( for boarding and the repelling of boarders) Walking around in your ship is planned as well, along with planetary walking, FPS ( both on ships and planets) planetary landing ( direct control, no cut scenes) Both Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous pretty much have the same final items planned for the game, they are just getting to that point by different routes.
Hey Togg, do you know if they plan to have any sort of asteroid mining? And if they do, any sort of ship/weapon/module construction with the materials?
Does the name Elite: Dangerous bug anyone else? It's like Assassin's Creed being called Grimdark Shadow Black: Killer Assassin.
Hah, not really. Stop being so easily annoyed . If it were called something like Elite: Dangerous Spaceship Captains Laserkillers in OuterSpace I could maybe start to see your point. I see it like this. Elite, cause of the series. Dangerous because all games need a subtitle to show that it is a reboot . I would'nt have minded it being called Elite 3 though.
I can't lie. When I read the name all I can think of is John Oliver. edit: sorry, a little context: http://www.salon.com/2013/07/23/weiner_cops_to_carlos_danger_sexts/
Not really a huge fan of 'dangerous', because in its form it doesn't specify wtf its talking about. What's dangerous? Elite? Should I not touch it? Although not like Star Citizen is any better.
I doesn't, I just meant that most reboots get a subtitle so Dangerous seemed as good as any. I would've preferred Elite 3 though.
But it doesn't tell me anything about the game And this isn't a SC vs E: D conversation, so let's not start that m'kay.
