I've actually talked to the guys who make games like that and talk about their 'clever monetization science' behind it and how stupid everyone else is. I feel like punching their teeth out. For instance a heated debate when I said that "making the game fun" is the most important aspect of monetization, "NO!" and then a wall of text trying to justify this approach of using statistical analysis to find every damn last thing about the game that can be cashed.

Because, obviously you can't make money by just making a fun game and a couple of addons when it sells enough so you can pay off investors and afford to make more.

Often these types focus on mobile games with the stereotypic 4 different caricature figures in 4 different screenshots saying that this Travian clone has 'deep strategy' and 15 other selling points. They probably also buy their art all from the same Caricature & Cartoon Studios since all those games look exactly the same.

And according to them it's a fair monetization tactic to add "pay real money" or "spend your crystals" buttons everywhere within the screen so people accidentally click on them without an undo option.

Overall it should be dubbed as a separate genre of games called "monetization games" imho, including games "f2p" games that are designed to attract children and then cost ~10$ and when buy the game it's actually just 4x 16 piece puzzles.

So yea I'm not saying this is like that but I'm always cautious these days whenever there's talk of DLC and "extra content" because some fuckers are just abusing that stuff to no end.

it's a video game version of a 'get rich quick' scheme and all of the publishers who buy into it to the extent that you're talking about are shooting themselves in the foot, sure there's tons of gullible fools out there willing to sell their souls for a donut

however, while I doubt the 'business' model will ever go completely extinct (seeing as how people have been fleecing foolish people since the dawn of time) I expect it will reach a head at which point people in general will simply stop trusting those publishers who abused them in this fashion, and those publishers will only have whatever remains of their poorly built house of cards.

It's really not especially clever. It's the same model as arcade machines, just as executed by people too creatively bankrupt to pull it off by making their game both fun and challenging enough that you pop another quarter in.

All I have to say is King.

Investor & Lawyer run copypaste shit that has stolen from everyone, has sued everyone and is still in top3 in popularity and customer satisfaction.
And the endless droves of drones that want to be just like them. (fucking insanely rich through legal bullshit)

    "Explore and defeat Sword Coast"
Faerun? Again? I know they are trying to make it their be all setting but why every single thing they release has to be set there by default?

I just wish they'd focus on part of it other than the Sword Coast. Why spend all that time and effort developing Mulhorand, Kara Tur, Thay, and so forth and NEVER set anything there?

who is neither from the Sword Coast, nor does he spend most of his time there. He simply visits from time to time like a blizzard or an earthquake, leaving destruction and mayhem in his wake.

funnily enough, the only games in which Drizzt appears on the sword coast is the Baldur's gate games, I thought it ironic that he never appeared in the Icewind Dale games, but turns out he's only appeared, or been mentioned, in 8 games of Forgotten Realms (two of those being sequels), the list being quite a bit longer than I expected of games in that world.

Well, there was the first NWN expansion... Shadows of Undrentide. And the first NWN2 expansion... Mask of the Betrayer.
My favorite part of Skyrim was conducting my own jihad against the Altmer.
