normally true, but... it actually flipped somehow, I guess the skid was so high where it was that when it dropped to the ground when I boarded it then it just went on over

Ugh, that fucking storm last night wreaked havoc on my internet connection! Aside from that, I jumped up to 100th place on the server, Borf!

So.... Ravandar and I came up with a totally Evil(TM) plan. I would like to try it out with a few people. Actually I have a couple evil plans running around in my head now.

Here is how we had considered it going down. There is a tiny island off the main one to the North. The idea was place an artillery "company" on that island with some support and an Ammo truck. The mortars can reload from the ammo truck and lay down constant barrages on the Northern half of Stratis. Now we have fire support anywhere in the North. It is unlikely anyone will wander out that way to find our firebase.

Well, we ran into a snag with that plan, specifically there isn't a chopper that can pick up any of those really large ammo trucks. We tried several things and it just didn't work. We even tried the sling system with the DLC choppers. No go for that.

So today, with a tiny bit of sleep available I decided to test where a crash wouldn't cost me much money. In doing so I hit upon a very simple solution my tired brain just didn't come up with because it was blindingly simple. Instead of ferrying an ammo truck. Buy a Taru AMMO, Doh!!!!

So with further testing I can land it on that little island. You can also load the Mortars and other static pieces into the helicopter to make them easily portable you just break them down and load the two pieces. So we could throw some static AA pieces and Mortars onto the island, give them someone doing overwatch to prevent anyone from swimming out there, and we have a not totally secure firebase, but one that should remain unseen for a good long while. If they do discover it you have the pilot and two Artillery people who will load up into the helicopter and reposition to a different location that is out of the way.

    -----------------------------------------

Separate but related, the Gorgon is a beastly vehicle. I think a three man team, Driver, Gunner, UAV Operator could wander around the map offering major support to the infantry. It's not terribly fast but it's faster than a tank and can take one on in direct combat or wipe out an infantry squad easily. It's also amphibious for some added unexpected flanking.

I endorse that plan. Make sure you have some AT pieces to take out any boats that try to make drive-bys and a sniper or 2 to watch the mainland. I know I've shot people on that lighthouse island with a .50 before, plus if you keep eyes on the Kamino storefronts you can keep enemies from setting up in that zone and coming at the island.

Not that island, but still good ideas. I wasn't sure how many would want to commit to protecting a rock in the ocean. The one I am talking about is North.

See that little dot of land all the way in the North? No one goes up there. Killfarm is about as close as most of them go. Now someone flying near Killfarm might spot us which is why some AA defense might be good with AT for boats. Maybe Static AAs as they can reload from the ammo chopper?

Oooooh, didn't know about that one. Yeah that might work better, plus it's not a cap zone so there's no interest for people to go there.

You can't break down weapons on wasteland's server. (tried as medic, sniper, mechanic, and diver) the weapon starts to break down, then at the end says
"unable to break down weapons" then pops back up out of the bags. (with the "load" option you can load the weapons into heli/ other vech)

Brilliant! Are we thinking two people for mortars, each with their own? You only need one person for a mortar, though the game always puts 2-3 NPCs on them. My vote is 2 mortars to harass enemies and support friendlies as the rest of the team hits caps and objectives. The helicopter pilot could double as a UAV op since they'd only need the terminal. Then 1-2 snipers for overwatch/AA duty and we'd be set. From that position you'll only be able to hit half the island though. So any targets in the south would lack supporting fire. Or, if we have an exceptionally large group, put another mortar team on the southeast island and we have full coverage.

We should also really work on clearing out of cap zones a lot faster as well. The normal for us should be, when capping a town that we need to supply in, after we've entered we should immediately get what we came for. I wouldn't spend longer than 60 seconds once that store menu pops open. After resupply, we should take up positions at the edge of the spawn point, positioned in the direction of our next objective in the best possible cover that lets us view incoming areas. Upon the timer flipping, we'd be sprinting back into the woods and on to our next mark. This should help cut down on getting bogged down.

Also, after a firefight in the field, we shouldn't spend any more than 1 minute to check bodies for goodies. Then, get while the getting is good. When near a hot spot like Kamino, if the pop is high we really don't want to get bogged down there. Better to fade out a bit and see who else comes to play. Unless your team has shit tons of players, capping it isn't really too useful. It is, however, prime hunting grounds for folks who do love to stop in for a shit, shower and shave. We'll also have to work on approaching hot areas a lot slower. We tend to run up a bit too fast and get swarmed without realizing we walked right into a giant X.

When I'm solo'ing, I like to find a comfy spot up high, with plenty of cover, and actually watch a cap point for a few minutes before sneaking in. It gives time for any other busy bodies to do their business and come out from the store or supply hunting, so I don't have to walk so far to get food 'n water. For this reason, I prefer to resupply in areas where traffic tends to come and go, but not stay for long, like Girna or the gun stores out in the boonies. With a gun store under 2 klicks away from Girna, it makes a good route for the dapper woodsman to pop in and out without making too big of a scene. Plenty of trees, plenty of hill sides, plenty of opportunities to get the jump on the unwary traveler bouncing down the hill in a random vehicle. If you have to make a scene, everything gets cut down to 1 minute unless we're just outside of a cap window, minute and ten seconds for example. Even then, as soon as that cap hits, we need to be heading back into the woods. The longer we stay on the cap, the closer death rides to our doorsteps.

I absolutely love the mortar team idea! The first time we went by that island I kept thinking it would be an excellent stash spot if the server didn't reset all the time.

I second what Daemon said, last night after I capped a cargo tower I came under almost immediate (but inaccurate) mortar fire. If there had been more than just me there it could have been ugly.

We tried the mortar thing. We had an UAV flying above Air Station Mike spotting targets inside it and directing fire. We managed to get one kill doing that then the server reset.

I think I was living up to my title of chief crasher of helicopters fairly well last night, I stopped counting after my 6th little bird of the night.

all joking aside, when using the advanced helicopter flight model its good to know how the helicopter behaves before putting it into low level flight. Most of my practice is messing around in the MH-9 which gives you some bad habits when you fly an AH-9. I found that the AH is fairly similar to the MH in a good bit of the flight envelope but it differs critically in low rpm/low torque situations when you are at the bottom of a maneuver and pulling out. The way the added weight of the miniguns and rockets is simulated causes it to feel much more heavy and lethargic, maneuvers that are quick and easy in an MH will put you into the side of a ridgeline with the AH.
