I thinks hes just finishing the 6th book and has 2 more to write. He writes slow. It may be 7th that he just finished with 8 and 9 left to write. I dont remember what book came out last (5th or 6th). I think he has the whole storyline All done and drafted out but not much of the actual writing.
The 6th book is supposed to be out early next year. Based on his previous writing pace, the 7th and final book will be out in 2020 at the earliest.
The one brandon sanderson finished? The wheel of time. Has 14 volumes in it. I think the original authore did the first 8 and had an untimely demise i think there were originally supposed to be 2 more for 10 books but they ended up being split due to size. And just realized your asking about martin. Whoops.
man i hope so! MUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENED also relevant from a omgthisistakingforever perspective, any of you guys fans of stephen king's dark tower series? fanfuckingtastic reads if you haven't already, plus they're already done so you don't have to wait the 20 years it took him to complete the series
My favorite preface of any book was Asimov's iirc. 5th or 6th Foundation book. It started roughly as "I never intended to write more of this serie and I considered it finished and I repeatedly turned down requests to write more of it but this last time they made me an offer so generous that I no longer could refuse. Then I wrote the whole book straight through" -read between the lines "sorry but they paid me millions in advance, so sorry" Iirc this was the book where they're on a space ship and spend practically couple chapters in idle chit chat about ancient railways and such, just to add to the page and word count.
They're epic stories with some amazing ideas, but all of the foundation books are slogs to get through.
Try the Culture novels. 10 novels, all in slightly different writing style. The 3rd in the series(you can actually pretty much read them however you like, but I go by publishing date) actually has a structure of one set of a story in reverse chapters, starting at 14 and counting down, and the regular set of a story in normal chapters. How they intertwine to tell you teh complete story is ... amazing. I honestly don't have another word for it. If you want a series that has amazing ideas, locales, and generally make you sit there and go "Wat" at the end, constantly thinking about what each section meant.. then it's a series I highly recommend.
I think the original trilogy was very entertaining and also some of the old scifi such as 'steel foam' etc. was funny. And it is so obvious that the Empire is what Lucas ripped off for his Star Wars setting.
need to get around to reading that series. Just looked again and Brandon Sanderson only did the last book (though during writing it was deemed to be to large for one book and was split into 3.) so Robert Jordan (original author) did 1-11. I actually love these authors who make these non lazy magic systems like fucking harry potter. has the most lazy magic system ever. I think the 2nd or third worst type is actually the force in star wars. By lazy I mean there is almost no limit to what can be done there are practically no consequences to it. but brandon sandersons stuff is pretty good too. mistborn trilogy is the start. you don't actually have to start with it though. but 32 or more books. mistborn planet will also be the first society in this universe to do space travel. the first trilogy is pre victorian (style of society and stuff very oppressive not really sure what time period maybe dark ages). next part is industrial revolution technology (trains and electricity) and the third trilogy is futuristic. Theres also fan theories (because sanderson hasn't said anything yet) that since there is a different magic system on each planet (which not everyone can use the magic system) that if they go to another planet would they still use the same system from their home planet? would they use the system of the planet they are one? actually I think the current series of mistborn wasn't a planned series it kinda just happened. the 2nd trilogy I think modern tech and the third trilogy will be futuristic. I may be wrong. it's hard to tell.
I actually like 3rd edition dnd. If you get the wrong spells for the day, you're fucked. If you run out of spells, you're fucked until tomorrow. Yeah there are super powerful spells, but they are expensive and require decades of experience to use. Casting one before you're ready can kill you.
You might enjoy Hunter x Hunter. Its magic system is both the hard and soft type at the same time. Any conceivable effect is possible, but what any individual character is able to do is highly specific, and putting restrictions on a power makes its effect stronger, so with a few exceptions you know everything about how a character's power works before they start using it. The author's good at coming up with surprising applications for even seemingly useless powers, so you never really know in advance who's going to win a fight.
