Some ago AH5017 fell in Africa above Sahara. That was very soon after russians shot down MH17. The one that fell over Indian Ocean was MH370.

This latest one near Indonesia was QZ8501.

It's been a bad year for aviation and yet you could have ten times the incidents and it'd still be safer than driving. It is one of the things a human mind often cannot quite grasp. Some asshat driving so close to you he almost hits your bumper, lots of snow falling on clear ice and no traction. Suddenly someone crashes in front of you and you need to slow down - but then the guy behind you crashes to your bumper and uses you as a battering ram, driving your car into the wreckage.

 

may not be able to wrap their minds around it, but they can sure wrap their bumper around it!
