Blizzard announced a new game IP, overwatch. http://us.battle.net/overwatch/en/ Basically, looks sort of like a Team Fortress mixed with more hero type classes? Could be fun, signed up for a beta invite.
Uh, hell ya. So, this looks like typical Blizzard. Which a good thing. They take a mature format, RPG, RTS, etc and make it their own. With Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, and now this, the only genre they have left is mobile puzzle game. Which I'm sure is coming soon. This is obviously derived from TF2. Which of course people are bitching about. Uh, TF2 just added on to a genre that had already been around for a decade. It's not a matter of originality. If you want that, hit the indie scene. Lots of great stuff out there. This is about can they make it their own, do it better and is it fun. Looks to play like TF2 on steroids and I definitely get a very strong Unreal Tournament feel from it. Which is a good thing. Will so much play this even though I suck at FPS titles at my age. This should be the DEFACTO ShieldWall Game of the Month. Every month.
Not really a MOBA. Heroes of the Storm is their MOBA. This is straight up FPS team-based games. Also, it reminds me a Hell of a Lot like Shadowrun. too sweet.
The archetypes remind me of a MOBA, but yeah, it's an FPS... somehow this is making me think of a Monday Night Combat, but first-person.
Reminds me an awful lot of Forge or Nosgoth Never liked blizzard games, doubt this one will change that.
I consider Blizzard as possibly the best game company in existence. I'm eager to see if RSI can steal their place. All that said, I only like Blizzard's strategy games of all Blizzard games - the issue is graphical for me. Brightly colored caricatures really put me off so bad, I'm personally all about immersion and when the graphics portray the whole thing as a joke or for 4-10 year olds I just can't attach to it mentally. I get collateral damage from children's shows and toys daily and I don't want any of that shit in my games, I prefer them realistic, whether they're cartoons or human like characters they need to have grit, dirt and so. I also don't mind if gameplay is built around even remotely feasible ideas but it's not as important as not getting a feel that all the characters are jokes and the whole world is made by Fisherprice.
As usual every new game is all about caricatures and "this could be sold at children's section" characters.
It seriously looked like it was from Disney or Pixar. Although not a bad thing but it would have made a better movie then a game.
to me gameplay is higher in priority than graphical style. The style also imparts a mood/character to the game, which, while being secondary to gameplay does color the experience. Choosing a cartoony appearance is obviously trying to make the game light and carefree in mood rather than moody and serious, which supports the semi-ridiculous character powers found in the game. The less serious the game, the more ridiculous you can get with the in-game mechanics, it all meshes.
Correct and I also get that there are already quite a selection of gritty and realistic shooters to choose form. I have no doubt that Blizzard can pull it off with this one, make a fun game but it's really in the opposite direction of gamer demographic map than where I've dug my foxhole. Just want to make sure that this is a personal preference issue and that I honestly think they're going to ace the game. I have a lot of faith in them, I would like to be as good as they are one day - if that's at all possible.
I think it looks really awesome.. even knowing it is a Blizzard game. They do not have any lore they can rape this time.
Why would they rape their own employee (Josh "Lore" Allen, senior community representative)? Plus it's their story and it's theirs to retcon as they see fit. But on topic, I am very excited about this game.
It stops being just there story when you have millions of people who have invested a lot of time and money into it.
