Was that the one where they had literally the hull of IJN Yamato with space engines and cannons had laser cannons in them? I suppose the CnC was also retrofitted but... There's something disturbing about watching a water ship flying in space and even having the hull's belly painted red to the watermark etc..

(why couldn't they just make it an uber cool spaceship?)

(I keep trying to find a rudder or propeller somewhere)

They had to use what they had, and you never know you might have to land in water.

Ah, so it is an issue that is addressed in the plot?
(running low on steel, let's put this engine on this ship)

No but I thought you might know of the plot and if they somehow addressed why they'd put engines on an old hulk rotting at the bottom of the ocean. Just assuming based on your 'had to use what they had' that it was somehow addressed in the plot that maybe they were low on resources and floating an old battleship from the bottom of sea and lifting it to orbit was economically smarter than to build a spaceship from, say, minerals from asteroids or so. It would make sense in the sense that all space assets were already fully utilized towards ship construction and they were resorting to mobilizing ground based assets to produce ships as well.

It does actually go into it in the first episode, the oceans dried up so it wasn't floating anywhere. As for why 1 they didn't really have the resources and 2 because they had to hide it from scary asshole aliens who throw rocks at them from space.

Or just watch the live action movie that came out a few years ago, that's if you can stomach Japanese acting.

The Legend of the Galactic Heroes was originally a best selling novel that was later turned into a anime. The show lasted over 110 episodes, had several OVA's, and movies.

    A synapsis from the wiki.

The story is staged in the distant future within our own Milky Way Galaxy, approximately in the late 36th century. A portion of the galaxy is filled with terraformed worlds inhabited by interstellar traveling human beings. For 150 years two mighty space powers have intermittently warred with each other: the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance.
Within the Galactic Empire, based on mid 19th century Prussia, an ambitious military genius, Reinhard von Müsel, is rising to power. He is driven by the desire to free his sister Annerose, who was taken by the Kaiser as a concubine. Later, he wants not only to end the corrupt Goldenbaum dynasty but also to defeat the Free Planets Alliance and to unify the whole galaxy under his rule.
In the Free Planets Alliance Star Fleet is another genius, Yang Wen Li. He originally aspired to become a historian through a military academy, and joined the tactical division only out of need for tuition money. He was rapidly promoted to an admiral because he demonstrated excellence in military strategy in a number of decisive battles and conflicts. He becomes the archrival of Reinhard, though they highly respect one another. Unlike Reinhard he is better known for his underdog victories and accomplishments in overcoming seemingly impossible odds and mitigating casualties and damages due to military operations.
As a historian, Yang often predicts the motives behind his enemies and narrates the rich history of his world and comments on it. One of his famous quotes is: "There are few wars between good and evil; most are between one good and another good."
Besides the two main heroes, the story is full of vivid characters and intricate politics. All types of characters, from high nobility, admirals and politicians, to common soldiers and farmers, are interwoven into the story. The story frequently switches away from the main heroes to the Unknown Soldier fighting for his life on the battlefield.
There is a third neutral power nominally attached to the Galactic Empire called the Phezzan Dominion, a planet-state (city-state on a galactic scale) which trades with both warring powers. There is also a Terraism cult, which claims that humans should go back to Earth, gaining popularity throughout the galaxy. Throughout the story executive political figures of Phezzan in concert with the upper-hierarchy of the Terraism cult orchestrate a number of conspiracies to shift the tide of the galactic war so that it may favor their objectives.

The SDF-1 had no problem landing in the ocean. the supercarriers that became the arms had the red paint but they were fairly modern carriers in robotech/macross. actually I think those carriers were designed specifically for the veritechs and had some of the salvaged tech in them.

only space battleship yamato I've seen is the live action movie (have never been able to find the animated stuff).

No clue why they still insist on calling it star blazers when it's only in Japanese with English subs. Also rather expensive.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is really good but relatively unknown anime. Hidden gem, so to speak.
Reminds me I need to finish it at some point...

The sheer realism on the battles is very very nice. High power lasers evaporate armor as they should, engagements are very long distance and so forth, numbers are very important. Early on a high ranking officer is killed by a pillar of steel that is formed as superheated armor erupts and takes form as it cools (or so).

I just never get the artificial gravity thing, but it's usually just easier to have it than not, people are thinking about naval ships in space and/or people don't have the faintest respect to the essence of gravity which is one of the least understood and most elusive forces to even consider of controlling.

yeah I figured they were being ddos'd. Last time it was cruntchyroll that was behind the attack because they wouldn't take a few anime down. Wonder if they are at it again. I know hsub s and nyaa,I think a few others share the same server.
