Let me first say, I have no problem with parking inside a building and using it for cover. Its a legal tactic, a wise move and has its own downsides. The most obvious of these are:

    1) When you move into a building, you do damage to it (reducing its effectiveness right of the bat).
    2) There is a chance that you will take damage also.

Now, when you deploy into a building, Megamek doesn't enforce either of these penalties. I think this allows for a bit of an exploit, giving you the benefit of the cover, but none of the downsides to moving into the building.

I'm not trying to :crying: or point any fingers, I just think this is something Megamek doesn't handle correctly. Until it does, I think we should avoid deploying into buildings. Moving into them after the match starts is perfectly fine.

    What does everyone else think?

Actually the board game lets you do the same thing. I believe the presumption is that a work crew properly made the hole your tank rests in rather than driving through it. Last night's game definitely showed some of the weaknesses of the tactic - the hetzers had trouble maneuvering inside the buildings or leaving them is we brought them down around their ears. Both of OpFors kills came from tanks that weren't in buildings at the time, although they were able to hold us off in a couple places by taking such positions inside buildings. My only real concern is that Megamek doesn't outright state if a vehicle is in a building or on the roof - you have to manually check their elevation. Since its open source I'm tempted to see how difficult that would be to add as a feature.

I'm fully open to people's ideas - I know many people were involved both in last nights and the previous matches hetzer missions - how did it make the game turn out from your perspective?

I say it's up to Magnus to decide but I definitely agree with this. It doesn't make sense to me that you are able to be in a building without risking something with the large benefit that gives. If the building isn't purposefully built to accommodate vehicles that is:D

The other issue is that it completely ruins any attempt at ambush if you can't deploy in the building. I'm pretty sure, even with all the double blind stuff on, if someone damages a building you see exactly what hex its in.

Having prepared positions for tanks are a standard doctrine for most miltaries. Usually it is more of a hole and a berm to shoot over, but I know I saw on History channel they used buildings to hide in a lot during WWII.

I really dont have a dog in the fight since I am flying over it all and cant hide or go through buildings. If it is a scenario of the badguys defending a town or whatever I can see them hiding in buildings and waiting to pop some unsuspecting Borg who drives by. Seeing as how it is "our" city we cant really just roll through the town destroying everything to find them first which would be my idea if you didnt want to get caught by them.

Yeah, I think you're right there Dihm. Damn you Megamind! Err... I mean Megamek.

Well, this was not a major deal, definitely not worth fixing if it means cheating the Op4 out of ambush tactics.

All of you make very good points. I too have been concerned with the state of the urban maps so far. I am working to rectify the situation. I think one of the biggest problems is also how resilient the average building is on most maps. I think toning down the CF will go a long way in fixing the problem. What do you guys think of these figures:

If we go by "Hunchback standards", it should take about 1 turn of weapons fire for each "level" the building is to collapse it I think:

    25 CF = Light building
    50 CF = Medium building
    75 CF = Heavy buidling
    100-120 CF = Hardened building

alternatively do it *roughly* by weight class (so its easier to remember):

    35 CF = Light building
    55 CF = Medium building
    75 CF = Heavy buidling
    100-120 CF = Hardened building

I think its valid i mean they had time to prepare we did march into their domain more or less and iam sure as we defend we can use the same tactic with our tanks to our advantage ^^

You can blow a hole on one side of the building and enter em in relative safety (as long as you keep structural integrity intact) and as i said before magnus is the one that even told us about it / to do it :D

actually it does ... you see the number with the elevation (its pink) on the upper edge of the hex the unit is in (if its above or below surface level). Same position as VTOL elevation
