The thing about fallout is you get to make your own adventure while going on this massive story.

    Hopefully it is good.

I heard Westworld was pretty good. Kind of strange though that they are doing such a similar project. I mean Westworld and Fallout borrow a lot of the same ideas regarding synths. Maybe this is just a case of Amazon looking for someone who would handle the Fallout IP well. I hope that's the case anyway.

Kiiiinda. Without spoiling anything, Westworld is more about what people would do to each other if there were no consequences, and then suddenly there are consequences. It's really well-written though so their treatment of Fallout ought to be pretty good.

I'd be curious to know how true to the original film the series holds. I watched a couple episodes but didn't delve very deep into it and haven't really been drawn to return yet.

Suffice to say it stands as its own thing well enough that it never even occurred to me it might be a remake. It starts out slow and easy and eventually turns into a real mindfuck where you don't really know who you should be rooting for, who or what is real, and sometimes even when the events you're seeing are actually happening.

Okay so Westworld is one of those early 70's sci-fi movies that is wildly forgetable but fucking fantastic. The whole idea is a wild mind fuck when you dive into it. There was a squeal as well as a TV show. It was also written and directed by Michael Crichton who wrote this whole list. Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, Congo, Raising Sun and Eaters of the Dead (re: The 13th Warrior) are some highlights.

That is the season 1 trailer for the 2016 show on HBO. It is...pretty faithful to the source material. Something to remember though is Westworld is an IP that Crichton revisited many many times over the years in talks with fans, interviews, college speaking tours and other things like that. The show uses a -lot- of that stuff as well as the original movies/show. So it is very faithful to the ideas and concepts of the original movie, some characters as well, but everything is expanded out because of the episodic nature of the show. Currently at three seasons.

On edit: to the original topic. It is fucking fantastic the Westworld guys are working on Fallout.

SO basically, Westworld is an appropriate IP where messing with the original story is okay; a "re-imagining done right". Take that, Disney.

Really messing with the original isn't wrong per-se–what's the point of just making the same thing twice, after all? Where studios fuck up is they miss the point of the original. Consider the difference between Bladerunner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The film is only really loosely based on the original and is very much more a Ridley Scott work than it is an P.K. Dick work, but the major theme of what it means to be human, whether you can even trust your own mind to actually know if you are human are there. So now we have two absolute literary masterpieces from the same lineage.

Just look at the many many variations on the Journey to the West or The Wizard of Oz, some of them are downright amazing, others (many) less so, but they're all inspired by the same story. Trouble is far too many of the directors want to use the title and not the story, they want to borrow the fame of the name without actually putting in the work to earn it. Personally I hate those kinds of directors and think they should all die in a fire, if you're going to borrow parts of the story without honoring it then you should do the Dragonball thing and just not actually associate it at all, except the little nods to the source like legendary weapons or characters. (Goku, obviously the monkey king, Oolong is the pig demon etc... Goku's staff). They deviated sufficiently from the original works to be their own thing, but used characters and items that were familiar to most of their target audience so they didn't have to put too much effort into establishing them, beyond the differences between their version, and the more commonly known. Many of the Wizard of Oz stories do much the same thing, either using Dorothy but changing her character, or filling the role of Dorothy with someone else who may or may not be named Dorothy. To a lesser extent they've done similar things with Alice, but Disney makes that storyline somewhat toxic even if they don't own it.

Yeah, Dragon Ball’s a great example too, since it’s both an example of Toriyama drawing inspiration from an otherwise unrelated story and big Hollywood studios totally freaking missing the point and creating one of the biggest jokes of an adaptation ever.
