The work is mostly on the front end of things (which is why getting this going is taking so long). I'm having to spend a lot of time making icons, balancing game mechanics, etc... basically pulling this all out of my ass from previous GM experience. Once I have a system set in place, creating new campaigns will be much easier to implement and keep track of than whet we were doing before.

One thought I had while taking a poop, do we want to vary the size of the strategic map based on the planet? Some being larger, some being smaller? I thought about doing calculations to see how far a mech force would travel in a week given their minimum walking speed over a period of 8-10 hours, and then extrapolating that in to how many hexes on the map and then in to how large each hex is and then in to how large the planet is...

But I haven't gotten the time yet to do so. ;)

I guess the simplest scenario an Urbanmech, moving 2 hexs a week. That's 21.6 kph. Let's dumb it down further and say they only go 1 a week. That's 10.8 kph. Figure they move a generous 10 hours a day. That gives us 108km a day, 756 in a week. So 756km per hex. Thule has 34 hexes across its equator. That means the circumference of the planet is 25704 km or 15971.7 miles. Earth's circumference is 24,901 miles (40,075 km), which would be a map 53 hexes across. Thule is 64% the size of Earth, thus must be much more dense to maintain a Earth standard gravity.

Aww crap. Dihm brought the big guns, logic AND math!

I too was thinking of this and came to much of the same conclusion (although I never came up with specific numbers). However, ultimately I decided to go with the smaller map so that it could be easily viewed on the forums. If I made it too large, the icons would be hard to distinguish (also, smaller map was faster).

That said, my math on it was very fuzzy. I think i also assumed that while they would travel at their cruise speeds, they also wouldn't necessarily travel in a straight line, might backtrack a bit, or stop occasionally to investigate something.

Actually... come to think of it.... your example with the Urbanmech... I think it might be off a bit. Did you account for the -1 MP to cruise/walking? I tweaked the movement a bit in the rules:

"SWM movement = Cruise MP of slowest unit in Lance minus 1"

    A Urbanmech's walking speed is 2. 2 - 1 = 1 MP per turn. That means ~108km per week (assuming was traveling only 10 hours a day).

So basically, the math is VERY fuzzy and the map is not really an accurate indication of size of the planet. If you would like to work with me further on it to make it more accurate I would welcome that. The first version I had to do all by myself and had to rush to get things ready.

Yes, I did account for that, which is why I had it only moving 1 hex a week. ;)

oh... right... math was never my strong point :disturbed:

I wonder if we shouldn't number the hexes, so that way people can post their lance movement easily on the forums during the week and you can move em around on the graphics. That way the lance leaders don't have to try to find you (not like you aren't always around) on TS?

They are numbered. Right click the image and open it in a new tab (Protip: use the zoom function after) :)
