Who remembers internet in a box? Those were simpler times. The internet held whole gigabytes of files, and you could download ALL of it!

I remember internet that made noise when I used it, or that I had to use my phone to dial it up... Or tape drives... Floppy disks that were hard and hard disks that were soft...

Imagine if you had to hear that every time during the initial handshake on other items that use the internet

    14.4k.. Those were the times.

Downloading songs not even a MB in size and taking the whole night to download it off of napster.

    Oh that takes me back.
I was never allowed on the internet for more than 20 minutes a day because it was so expensive. So what I did was get up at 5 AM, pile blankets over the modem so my parents wouldn't hear it, and played flash games til about half an hour before I had to wake up for school.
When I confessed my early-morning exploits my mom said "So that was why the phone bills were so high! I think I owe Emma (my sister) an apology..."

I also remember thinking (before we got the dial-up modem and pretty much all the kids in my class had one) : "Man, I wish they would put the internet on a CDROM so I can use it too!"

So I'm sitting here watching the History Channel (yeah, yeah, I know) and just straight laughing my ass off. It's something about America's secrets, underground edition. They're talking about the transcontinental maglev underground trains that connect all the military bases. And the underwater passage that supposedly connects a lake in Nevada to the Pacific Ocean that the Navy uses to move nuclear subs around. Good stuff.

Not sure you can really call it the history channel at that point. Or the "science" channel a.k.a. the channel that uses science to get more viewers.

As the only media owners are News Corporation, General Electric (owns NBC), Time Warner, Disney, CBS (starting to get bought up by the others), and Viacom. 6 companies own more or less all media in the US, all news, all internet, and almost all radio. The weird part is it looks like the A+E is owned by both Disney and General Electric....

It took me solid 3 days of 24/7 downloading to get MechCommander demo! And it blew my mind and I've never been the same.

Remember those download managers? After finishing your download of 2 days you'd get "error, corrupt file" or some such notice because at one point during download the connection was cut and browser's download manager didn't quite ever figure out from which part to continue writing.

I also remember my first 300€ (~400$) phone bill, it was around those same times.

And the internet boxes... You'd access them with text based client and query for files and all...

Internet problems were so simple back then:
"I bought the internet.. but I try to open Explorer and it's not going anywhere?! What the hell is going on?!"
-"Did you also buy a modem and plug it in?"
"What the hell is a modem? Listen, I bought The Internet and I want it on my computer!"

Fucking americans. First they make the best shit in the world and then they turn it into shit. And even when they turn their good shit to bad shit no one can still match their level.

No entertainment production without representation! It's an outright revolt, world vs. USA and this time we are the colonies! We want you to keep up the good quality of your shit.

I remember back in the day there were actually history documents on history channel. Even though they were 110% from biased american point of view they were still some of the best history documents around, also the fact that unbiased history doesn't really exist and american propaganda is some of the most easily tolerated in the world. "No, Berlin never fell and yes, jews were behind the concentration camps!" - none of that shit on even the worst american history documents.

I also remember the day when National Geographic made fact based documentaries. Nowadays even they are increasingly making fake documentaries.

And so the whole history and biology are rewritten to a more entertaining format. I just wait for the day when this shit hits universities, "Megalodons are one of the greatest sea based threats to mankind". "Welcome to advanced course of Ancient Aliens, during this semester we'll be going in depth to the mechanical properties of ancient vishnu spacecraft and their interstellar empire"

Yeah... and when the Discovery Channel actually showed good science shows? Daily Planet actually used to be good, now, from the last time I watched it, it's about the newest tech that you don't actually need, neat little gadgets, and some minor science news. They've always had good co-hosts though, at least until Jay Ingram left.
