The Society for Creative Anachronism is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which feature tournaments, royal courts, feasts, dancing, various classes & workshops, and more.

Some would think larp or something like that, but SCA is more than just larp or roleplaying to MANY people. In the SCA we learn how to do many things, I focused on making armor and weapons due to the fact that I wanted to be a heavy fighter.
    A picture of my armor
    [IMG]

I haven't been to any SCA events in a while due to family and money issues, so I had the armor sitting there doing nothing, and when it came time to clean one of my rules is anything that sits for 5+ years gets thrown away. (wish I could throw my hubby, but that's a different story).
I was in the process of throwing my armor away when I went wait a minute... I formed this armor to fit my body... why can't I form the pieces of the armor to fix my monitor base.
So the skills I learnt from the SCA, I used in the "real world" to fix my monitor, and now the base of my monitor is held together with parts of my armor that protected me for 2 years.

The experiences we have throughout our lives change and shape who we are, every little thing. so Go out, experience things, the good, the bad, the ugly, they are all worth it. Thank you

The very first time I went to an SCA gathering, the weaponsmaster was not there, so some jackass with a shinai, seeing as I was armed with nerf bats, hit me in the goddamn head, slicing up my ear pretty neatly. Never. Again.

Based on SCA policy, that should never have been allowed. Release must be signed and all gear must be checked before anything starts. Checked every time.

Neither of you were using regulation weapons, and full face protection is mandatory

So... It wasn't the SCA, it was some guy being a dick, using a weapon for kendo rather than SCA. Against someone unarmored and using weapons for LARP
    :p

Hey, I was there for SCA. Several other members were in attendance. But I was new and they handed me nerf bats. Wtf am I going to do with nerf bats?

(And yes, the weaponsmaster was very displeased to hear about that.)

What you experenced happens on the fringe of Sca events, it's the people who are to poor to actually participate and qualify for the "real" combat. in the kingdom of the west we have lots of these rules

    http://www.westkingdom.org/wk_armoredcombat.htm

I have read each manual and when I walked to my fighter practice to become a heavy fighter, I did so in full gear, what probally happened with you was somebody saw boobies and long hair went a girl!?! (note many fat men in sca have boobies) They then thought that you didn't want to do any of the "good" sca things or the others who were there for their times were buzy doing their thing.

If you are interested I could help you find a local seneschal who could help you get started proper.

(a seneschal's job is to find the right group for you)

I learned the hard way about face protection, gave my ex (not at the time) brother in law one of my shinai to spar with, didn't bother to mention that they're not -thrusting- weapons, took a poke to the chin, was not very happy about it XD (though probably much happier than I would've been had it been to the eye)
none of this happened at an SCA related event, merely a shinai related event XD, I've contemplated doing stuff with the SCA but I tend to fall into the category of the 'too poor to SCA' :p

Yep, I'm in the 'too poor to SCA' crowd as well, but it's definitely something I've looked into before.

I am a big participator in SCA. I fight both heavy and light weapons, archery. I also carve my own drinking horns, although I am not the most spectacular artist. For those "too poor", most local groups have loaner gear to help you get started. In addition many people who make armor are often willing to help you make your own set!
(P.S. this was on my birthday just last year. Preparing for a spear only tournament)

Maybe? I think it is just an excuse to run around in tunics and long dresses. The sad part is it is advertised as fighter practice.

This could mean very different things depending on whether "crap" is a verb or a noun... :wat:

That could happen while queuing for a hot dog or waiting for a bus.
In fact, couple years back a guy waiting for a train here in Finland got hit to head with a real fireaxe and got killed.

I guess the assailant also just wanted to "show him something".

It's the same situation, essentially. Attacking someone unprepared and unequipped with a weapon. You were just lucky that the assailant didn't carry a katana or claymore.
But technically it is grounds for assault/battery, whatever the correct term is in english.

Obviously the assailant just wanted to ax the guy in Finland a question.
