(just kidding btw) currently? 3 medium lasers + a single AC/5 (i think). and it certainly isn't unheard of in canon. the Black Hawk has 12 goddamn ER medium lasers as it's primary configuration boating medium lasers has drawbacks too. ton for ton, an AC/20 has the same range and is still more efficient at dealing better concentrated damage when using rapid fire rules (which is why i always include them). on average, the AC/20 mech will beat the medium laser boat if they share the same weapon tonnage and heatscale. although less reliable, srms also deal roughly the same damage as medium lasers and give you the added bonus of being far more effective against infantry and vehicles. i know you guys are just giving me shit. honestly, though, if i'm already carrying ppc's or AC's, using medium lasers as my short range punch is hardly "boating" them. it is either that or srms and i just prefer the reliability of a medium laser over an srm rack. there are always exceptions of course... all of my favorite designs usually feature bracket firing which means i have short and long range punch, but not enough heatsinks to fire both. depending on my role, i might go more short or long range heavy, but i usually go ppc's and gauss rifle with medium lasers as backup because i'm the punchy/brawly type who likes to use ma' fists on occasions fitting its canon profile, my shadow hawk only has room for a single big gun + a bunch of smaller ones if i want to stay nimble, so of course it is going to look a little more boaty with the medium lasers
