Let me stress that I don't think I ever said the game was "good" in its current state, but I don't think it should be so easily discarded as "wank" either. If you can look past the rough edges, there is still a lot of room for growth... and that is something that most games can never hope for. The point I was trying to make was not that people should rush out to buy it, but they should keep an eye on it for future developments... if they like space simulation games of course.

I never got the impression they lied to me about the game, but then again, I never watched it that closely either. Maybe the reason why so many are disliking Rebirth is because of how unlike the rest of the X games it is. I can understand how that might frustrate fans, though. Frankly, I agree they should have just called it something else entirely. I strongly disagree this is a Colonial Marines scenario though. They stated on multiple occasions that they were taking the X series in a very different direction from before.

In regards to what is missing, from the previous games, I still think a lot of people are being overly critical about the game because it isn't the X sequel they wanted. You could nit-pick all day about what is different or missing, but I logged in literally HUNDREDS of hours with the old X games and the only glaring difference I see so far is that you can only pilot one ship.

    ======
    EDIT: for the record...
400+ hours playing X3 TC/AP according to Steam...
I think it is fair to say I had "some experience" with the previous series.
    ======

There are other lesser issues, but generally speaking, they are offset by other (potential) improvements.

    Yes, the UI is clunky.
Yes, the character designs are horrible.
Yes, there is no true autopilot (which sucks).
Yes, there are bugs up the ass.

    ...but...

UI is being fixed (or can be modded).
Models can be fixed or modded.
You can literally piggy-back onto any other ship for hands-free flying (pretty close to autpilot)
    Bugs are getting fixed.

    Speaking of general improvements...

    The environments are AMAZING.
The AI appears to know how to dock/use objects without killing itself.
    ...
I cannot stress this enough... I got SO. FUCKING. TIRED. of AI dying to a botched jumpgate activation. Seriously. The AI in the old X games was fucking terrible.

I'm not at all happy about the current state of the game and I don't advise anyone buying it until they fix some issues, but to dismiss it completely I think is really unfair. The game is incredibly unique from anything else out there right now and still has a lot of room for improvement.

I think you pretty much nailed it. Understandably, some people are upset by this revelation. ;)

Maybe a better way for me to put it is simply that the game still feels like it is in Beta. I can see where simple changes could vastly improve the experience, but the game really does feel unfinished in its current state.

Was going to refund the game. But i thought i hang out to see what happens to it, In it's current state they released a unplayable game hence why i said it is ''Wank''. I think they will support it with patch's for the short term. My hope is that the modding community do what they did to X3 TC.

they've already done 4-5 patches since launch. Egosoft doesn't have a history of "short term" support. I'm not saying this excuses them from releasing an unfinished product, but I don't think they deserve the same amount of vitriol as developers/publishers such as EA or Gearbox... at least for the moment. I would give it more time.

UPDATE: I've been playing more and killed my first cap ship today. Apparently a new feature is the ability to target individual components on ships. I managed to kill the cap ship with my tiny Albion Skunk by flying close to its engines and letting the cap ship's own "gravity well" pull me along while safely out of sight of the cap ships' turrets. Once there, i just blasted all of its engines until it was dead in the water. After that, I had some fun crawling up and down the ship surgically destroying each of the ships components until all that was left was a massive hull with smaller fires breaking out all over (apparently, this is how you capture larger ships later). The final catastrophic explosion was excellent (make sure you get a safe distance before they blow).

    Other random thoughts:
    • Missions operate pretty much the same as you remember.
    • You can get very noticeable discounts by scanning all sections of a station and getting them to like you.
    • Conversations with people are poorly implemented, but I don't find it a dealbreaker since it isn't the main focus of the game.
    • Drones are much more fun to use than before; I like to use the Assassin Drones to soften up an escort before attacking with my own ship.
    • If you can look past the poor voice acting, the campaign (so far) is fairly enjoyable.
    • I don't really like the two main protagonists. Ren acts a bit like a tool and Yisha is a bossy meddler.
    • Crashes are still popping up on some occasions so save before and after any new mission; had 1 crash in about 4 hours of play.
    • FPS drops for no reason some time... not sure why. It is a known issue they are working on.
    • The sector map is pretty much useless in its current form

    More observations:
    • Drones play a huge part in combat (I haven't even scratch the surface on the different drones available).
    • Drones are seperated by two (i think) categories: Autonomous drones and remotely controlled drones.
    • Autonomous drones seem to mostly help in attack and defense
    • Remote drones tend to have more specific functions such as hacking ships/stations, scouting hostile areas, and scanning objects (exception: Assassin Drone)
    • Parking your ship in one of the enclosed spaces around a station or along a larger ship's hull can allow significant protection while operating a drone.
    • It appears there are fewer guns and missiles available than before, but each one has better defined functions:
      • Guns: anti-fighter, anti-capship, etc. (some i haven't bought yet and don't know what they do)
      • Missiles: dumb firing, rapid firing anti-cap; large Fire & Forget anti-fighter; small seeking "swarm" missiles; wireless controlled torpedos
    • Upgrading engines makes you a better, faster dogfighter
    • Upgrading trading and scanning computer saves you a lot of legwork
    • Hostile stations are VERY lethal if you get too close.
    • Turrets can be disabled easily enough... but watch out when there are a lot of them.
    • There is a short delay after you enter effective range to when hostile turrets will start shooting at you. You can sometimes use this to your advantage.
    • Capship weak spots are definitely their engines.
    • Flak turrets are lethal to fighters at short range.
    • smaller AI ships are very good shots. Be careful about taking too many on at once (use drones to even the odds).
    • It doesn't appear you can farm the same agent for missions. There is apparently a bit of a cool down timer.
    • Occasionally, a person you converse with will like you enough to give you a ~40% discount. Exploit the shit out of that!

I killed a destroyer the other day, and it worked the same way for me. Kill the engines, kill the guns, kill the other sub systems and watch fireworks while eating popcorn. Not easy, but not impossible ala m5 vs m1 in any other X game.

I was watching Wingbreaker play it on his stream yesterday. It actually looks a lot better! But, since I was just watching someone else play I can't really say for sure. It certainly crashed 1000% less, but still had some frame issues (could have just been the stream). My favorite change is the removal of that stupid drift mechanic in the warp lanes! Now you can go as fast as you want but you have to avoid and dodge the slow traffic.

    100% agree

the new 2.0 patch fixes A LOT of the previous issues. the NPC meshes are still HORRIFYING, but the game is definitely much better than before. You have to give them credit for standing behind their product to meet demands. It may not be everything you may want, but it is the closest thing to SC that is out right now.

For those who have this, how is it now after all the patching? Was poking around steam and noticed that there was a new dlc that came out this year and was wondering if things have improved enough that its worth getting now.

Last I played, there was still a ton of issues, but I haven't played in ages. Will have to try it again.
