Another crowd funding project. Elite came out in wire frame in 1984. Elite Frontier later and was buggy due to publisher pushed early release. Original author David Braben is redoing Elite as an open universe multiplayer game. 400 billion stars/systems. I don't think it will match SC close at all but it will release later this year, supposedly. Something to do while waiting on SC. Was backer and I'm waiting to play it as well before getting into SC. Should be good enough to satisfy hunger for space games.
I'm necroing this thread a bit 'cause this video is worth your attention if you are waiting for E : D.
It appears that the combat could be just as good as SC. It probably just won't have the degree of out-of-cockpit immersion that SC has. Thanks HG for putting this back on my radar.
So this just got back on the radar by nearing beta, if you backed you should now be able to download a single player beta build. Full beta release is 30th May.
I didn't end up backing this because at first they had nothing to show in terms of vids, concept pics, etc. It is looking nice though, may pick up at release.
ok... Necroing this as well, Premium Beta v2 just started, lots of Balancing to be done. Devs Nerfed Gimbaled weapons hard (was a design decision to see how far down they could nerf them to give them a idea of their capabilities) a few weapons are still broken (looking at you Beam laser) another ship was added in, a small hauler (holds 16 tons cargo as opposed to the 4 tons that the Sidewinder/Eagle can carry and the 36 that the much more expensive Cobra can carry) Cobra seems to have taken a shield/Armor Nerf this time as its MUCH more fragile than in Beta 1. they also added in 3 more star systems to the 5 that we could already access for a total of 8 systems. Trading is still somewhat limited as many items that have demand have no suppliers and some supplies avail able have no demand anywhere( I figure this is because the systems that have/need those items are not yet available. it looks as if Normal beta could come as soon as July/August. will add in more info as it becomes available.
Normal Beta starts on July 29th.. unless i'm mistaken the buy in for normal Beta is $75.00 US . also July 29th is the last day to get the life time upgrades. had a mini update yesterday, they turned the tracking speed on Gimbaled weapons up a tad and are now tweaking the damage outputs on them. Started Trading yesterday with my cobra.. in a 5 hour session I took 48k credits and turned it into 500k credits... I figure tomorrow i'll break a million credits and the day after that i'll buy the big tradeship the Lakon-9 (its prolly between a starfarer and a Banu MM in size.. play around with that and try to earn enough to then buy a Anaconda Warship/trader. a Pre-growth Idris sized ship.
$150 gets you into beta now and you get all future expansions free $75 gets you into open beta in a few months plus the game but no expansions $50 gets you the game at launch
ok... since this is Beta and there is defiantly a full wipe coming on July 29th with the start of Standard Beta. I decided to go for broke and see just how well I could do in trading. this morning I found myself with a Cobra and 1.5 million credits. so, I bought the Lakon-9 trade ship. (cost 1.09 million credits) insurance on this ship stock (ie no weapons) is a whopping 110k credits, so after purchasing and leaving that minimum amount of cash aside.. I under took some rather risky trades.. literally running myself broke buying goods for transport to other systems. those early on risks were rewarded as I now have 1.5 million credits in the bank. I added in a couple weapons (I hold no illusions on combat with a Lakon, I just figure I can atleast make the other guy have to pay for some repairs) the Lakon-9 is a whole nother kinda ship... she's fat, slow and turns like a fat lady stuck waist deep in molasses. but OMG she can carry some trade goods.. I can easily turn 150K+ credits per run with mid level goods. as I gain cash I can start trading the higher quality goods for even larger profit margins. Landing at a Station has risks.. hell, a LOT of people have troubles getting a sidewinder through the entrance way. however in reality a sidewinder or a Eagle can literally do a barrel roll through the entrance. a Cobra, which is MUCH bigger can with a steady hand, actually fly through the entrance vertically with a smidgen of room on either side of its wing. the Lakon though, that ship is magnitudes of size greater than a Sidewinder/Eagle. I have pretty damn steady hands, and a high quality HOTAS (Ch Hotas + Pedals) and I have scrapped the entranceway many times, sometimes even hard enough to drop my shields to 1/2 level. all in all this is shaping up to become a rather good game, I did find my first Bug today and felt really good submitting it for squashing.
The more I hear about this game the closer I am to picking it up, I might do it when I preorder an oculus Rift v2 this month.
ugh i'm still holding out for oculus consumer version.... hooolding out, holding out, hoooaoaoaldingo out.
agreed... I too will wait until the consumer version is released... both SC and Elite beg to be used with Oculus rift. although... you know, the money I have set aside for Oculus Rift.. It does seem to be smoldering
