Dakkaburn I actually took one of the MGs out, the one in the RT, swapped for the flamer. 1 ton of ammo is probably overkill for a tabletop game, but for a campaign, or 'riot control' it seems about right. Plus I got the CASE there in the LT with the ammo for the MG and SMG. I figured a field kit approach, if they even let me update my ride, would be the best way to get some lostech as a merc prior to the Clan Invasion. I end up with an up-teched Battlemaster that keeps the range bracketing spirit while adding mobility and heat dissipation and a better ability to burn the locals. Makes a better command mech, imho
Well with the "1 round round for 1 round of play" 1 ton of my ammo is alot. But realistically it's not. It's only 200 rounds and that would probably not even 10 seconds of sustained fire. But tabletop it would last forever.
Keep in mind, 1 "round" in tabletop has never represented a single actual round of ammo (with a few very specific exceptions). The number is just a representation of ammo that will be expended for one turn of fire (this is why ammo counts usually balloon in more recent Mechwarrior titles). MGs in Battletech spew a cloud of hot lead just like you would expect in real life, but in tabletop, 10 seconds of normal weapons fire is expressed as 1 "round" of ammo expended. So to expend a whole ton of MG ammo, one would have to fire a single MG for 2,000 seconds (more or less)! MG ammo has always been ridiculous like that.
Imagine the vulcan cannon as a modern equivalent to a RAC. Which RAC I'd be hard pressed to theorize, but that. It fires 6000+ rounds a minute, which is close to half a ton of ammo. basically it could fire for six straight rounds with roughly half a ton of ammo and be done. There's a lot of real circumstances that are suppressed in game rules in order to streamline gameplay, otherwise a system becomes bogged down in details. The game doesn't care how many rounds are fired per volley, only how much damage can be generated during that time frame. I mean in reality (which is one of the things that kills the translation to real time) a lot of the rounds you fire will miss, changing your hard tabletop value from a 1 point of damage to a variable ~1.
Considering MG ammo explosions are some of the most deadly and feared and the ammo packs the most "damage per ton", I can't imagine how many rounds are actually in there. I bet someone did an actual calculation at some point based on the weight of brass and propellant and such.
True. It's more of a 1 "round" is however many rounds are fired from that gun in 1 second bursts. Like the later WW II versions of m2 Browning on aircraft (m3 I think) was 1,200 rounds a minute on the low end. Essentially 20 rounds per second.
Yes, I agree. But specifically, I was speaking to the "functional use" of MG ammo in tabletop... my point stands... MG ammo has always been ridiculous. There are a ton of canon designs that would have been better served with half the MG ammo they carry. Not that it's a big deal really. Most veteran players know to dump their MG ammo the second there is a risk of an ammo explosion.
Oh yes. Until you realize what that mech was probably doing most of the time was simply walking around mowing down infantry units and light vehicles. I mean, the game doesn't show the dirty underside of this structure, it only shows the 'cool' side
Yes, yes,... but I've literally been talking this whole time about game mechanics here. (Never change, Damion. ) Speaking of canon... Canon Character creation is a topic I heard they talk about here.
If we get super accurate about it mg ammo shouldn't "explode" at all and any projectiles from the cook-off would do minimal damage due to not developing enough pressure/velocity leaving the casing. The only way they could be a danger would be if they were sealed in a heavy-walled pressure vessel and basically made into a pressure-cooker IED... Though there's really no reason to store rapidly-consumed non-explosive ammo that way.
That's a pretty cool site, thanks for sharing! Just a shame vehicle creation isn't on there. Do you think I'm overkill on detail? I do a have a more vague background partway figured out...
Prolly overkill. I'd give them the light, broad strokes and say you have more ready upon request. Is what I did for character and unit. But who knows if I'm right
You could always be a guy who stumbles upon a star league cache and starts yet another mercenary company...
The new Marauder looks cool as hell and I'm torn. Battlemaster is more versitle for atrocities and brawling. Marauder is more long range sniping friendly, keeping the commander on the fringes. "Field upgrade" of a MAD-3D
Since when is adding jump jets a "field upgrade"? I thought it required fairly serious refit facilities.
Also, is mech customization a significant part of the custom character write-up? I've been focused on putting together bio before going into the submittal link they emailed us. I've always associated mech customization in canon lore as mostly being a vanity perk for House unit commanders with significant production/refit facilities available and/or stable gladiators who hardly ever leave Solaris VII.
Shut you are face! The field is also replacing engine heat sinks, so... you know... Hell, I don't know if a custom variant is even a thing they will do, but why not try putting it down under Ride, right?
