Operation Grapes of Wrath

CONTRACT INFO:

A moderately armed pirate force has used the regional instability caused by the Tamar Union incident to strike a deep raid into vulnerable FRR territory. Weingarten holds no strategic value, but its lucrative commercial market and large population makes it an ideal target for thieves and slavers. Weingarten Defense Force aerospace assets have managed to drive off the pirates' dropships, however a sizeable enemy ground force still remains on planet causing chaos among the population. Normally, FRR forces would be more than a match to deal with this threat, but our regular forces are needed elsewhere tracking down remaining TU forces. Your unit is the closest asset we have available that can efficiently deal with this pirate threat. Due to our need to move quickly on this, we do not have time to secure mercenary funding for this mission. However, the governments of Weingarten and FRR are willing to offer full salvage rights to any parties willing to intervene on their behalf.

Professionalism in dealing with the pirates will be mandatory. Mercenary commands will be allowed to operate semi-independently under the supervision of a Weingarten Defense Force liaison, but they are expected to assist the WDF to the best of their ability. Finally, remember that Weingarten is a garden world; collateral damage will not be tolerated. Violators will be fined and/or prosecuted accordingly. Hit hard and fast; end this pirate threat before any more lives are lost.

Weingarten has four continents: Wurttemberg (where the capital city Neuberlin is located), Schussen, Baden, and Ravensburg. The planet is best known for its vast wine industry. The mild weather and long growing seasons make Weingarten ideal for growing crops, particularly grapes. The unique soil composition of Weingarten provides a flavor that cannot be reproduced anywhere else in the Inner Sphere, wine from the world is highly prized which leads to large profit margins for exporters. For most of its history Weingarten was ignored by military forces. It lacks strategic importance, defense industries, or vital resources, so occupiers simply changed the planet's administration and raked in the profits from the wine trade.

 

Mission 01: Popping The Cork

Despite walking into a ambush, Alpha Lance was able to rise to the challenge and decimated our enemies. Magnus was able to requisition three militia scout VTOLs prior to the mission and these proved crucial to their success. While Alpha used their superior tactical training to out-maneuver and route the superior pirate force, the scout VTOLs mercilessly harassed and detained the pirates' heavier mech units. Even after running out of ammunition, these scouts remained on the field to provide accurate spotting for Ghiest's withering LRM barrages. One by one, the pirates were isolated and picked apart. Val soaked up the worst of the damage and Trev blunted the worst of the pirates' northeastern push. In the end, Alpha destroyed two and captured SIX mechs; the last, a Banshee, falling to a brutal head shot from Magnus.

Mission 02: Pass It Around

Otack's tactical "genius" resulted in a "Divided" deployment for the lance. Dihm and Gihzmo deployed in the south first turn while Sheo and Skwi were delayed 3 turns due to getting wrong directions to the battlefield. Dihm and Gihz set up on behind a hill in the south and started barraging with long range fire to hopefully delay the oncoming enemy while waiting for their lancemates to arrive. After trading potshots to little effect Sheo and Skwi arrived in turn 4 to help turn the tide of battle. While the enemy Marauder and Wolverine closed in a crippling dual PPC blow from Dihm caused the Marauder to collapse and damage its hip actuator. It never arose again during the battle.

Being the fast mechs Gihzmo and Skwi moved northeast to try and split fire and draw some mech forces away from their lancemates. Moving north Gizhmo and Skwi were able to close in a focus on the Awesome, drawing inside its minimum PPC range and taking out a leg after some concentrated fire and hatchet blows. Meanwhile Sheo and Dihm help off the advance of the enemy Wolverine and Thunderbolt, trading vicious blows back and forth.



The enemy Wolfhound tried to flank around but was demolished by withering fire from Dihm's Warhammer. After collapsing to the ground the Wolfhound was completely decimated by a kick from Dihm which caused a cascading engine explosion. Sheo received withering fire from the Wolverine but after the Wolfhound went down, Dihm was able to redirect his fire and assist Sheo. There combined fire made short work of the Wolverine, ultimately disabling it.



Meanwhile Gizhmo and Skwi combined to take out the legs of the enemy Crusader and force its pilot to eject like the Awesome before it. Finally the Wolverine was crippled to the point of ejecting, leaving a pretty fresh Thunderbolt and the prone Marauder on the field. The Thunderbolt moved in to point blank range with Sheo and Dihm and was subjected to heavy fire and multiple leg kicks. After being knocked down and demolished Dihm kicked through the side torso and destroyed the engine. By that time, the Marauder's leg had been removed and pilot ejected, leaving all enemy mechs down and the battle finished.

Mission 03: Breaking the Seal

The pirates were more prepared this time. Hoping to cover the retreat of their more vulnerable elements, they had withdrawn to one of Weingarten's drier badland regions. Filled with broken terrain, treacherous bluffs, and blind corners, it was an ideal defensive position. However, Gamma Lance would not be intimidated and bravely moved in to engage. They were met with stiff resistance; the pirates had deployed jump capable mechs to block our pursuit. At first, the battle looked like an even match with neither side gaining a significant advantage. Then suddenly that all changed; a very brief lapse in judgement had placed MH's Centurion out of position. The pirates were surprisingly quick to exploit MH's momentary vulnerability. An unlucky direct hit from an enemy Victor's AC/20 was enough to knock his Centurion down. Struggling to stand over the broken terrain, he continued to fight as his lancemates scrambled to come to his aid. Alas, it was not to be. The Centurion went down fighting as it was obliterated by combined enemy fire. MH ejected to safety, but he was out of the fight and Gamma had lost their heavy hitter.

Gamma Lance valiantly attempted to rally, but the terrain continued to work against their efforts and the pirates were too well coordinated. Tzeentch bravely tried to play a decoy and draw away some of the hostile mechs. It almost worked, but another lucky shot from the Victor shredded his Assassin's leg and sent him crashing to the ground.



As Tzeentch ejected, the rest of Gamma knew that it was time to cut their losses. Frustrated, but out of options, they retreated to safer ground. The pirates had escaped... for now...

After the arrival of reinforcements, Gamma Lance was able to secure their lost pilots and Tzeetch's disabled Assassin, although the pirates were long gone. No additional salvage was collected. MH's Centurion was confirmed to be too far damaged to make serviceable again. It will be sold for scrap and MH will collect the Skjaldborg's Dispossession Insurance. His replacement mech has yet to be decided, but hopefully a solution will be found soon. However, it is Moro Ibex that has taken this recent loss the hardest; an all too close brush with death has made him consider early retirement from mercenary life. Hopefully, their comrades in arms can help Gamma pull out of this slump.

 

Mission 04: Closing Time


Above: The pirate's Victor was a particularly dangerous foe. It was encountered on more than one occassion and each time was a serious threat. It greatly contributed to the defeat of Gamma lance and destroyed or seriously crippled a number of Skjaldborg mechs over the course of the campaign.

sorry to see he did get away at the end, but I'll be happy to take Trev's old Javelin to go hunting him and any remaining pirates with the Trump Cards

 

Pro tip for my old Fire Javelin (First, don't break it), always run or jump full movement. Scout mostly, until you are able to get the drop on someone after they've moved (JJ in behind, unload 6 ML into back). She can be a rough ride at times, but if you keep her moving, keep her happy, she'll get you through some of the worst shit you'll imagine.

 

If a player leaves early, megamek drops them from the player list. it is annoying, but i dont know how to fix it.

The pirates are broken and scattered. Those that are left have abandoned or buried their remaining equipment and are making attempts to blend in with the population. I will write more on this later, but Wiengarten officials have said that they can take over from here rounding up the last of them.

 

i start up classes again tomorrow. essentially, yes.... but maybe try to squeeze something in before thanksgiving. no promises though
