Holy shit. I don't think we had a thread for this. Anyway, it's out now, it's fucking awesome, and you should get it. Yes, you. It's also the biggest launch of a Japanese game in Steam's history, BY FAR.

Basically, this is an endless Boss rush mode with giant creatures, and upgradable weapons/armor. Kill monster, collect shit, use it to make your shit better, rinse, repeat. But there is a TON of depth in your character setup and strategy, and every weapon feels completely different. I've tried 4 of them so far, and it's a different experience for them all.

PC performance is smooth as butter for me. I have a fairly powerful rig, but there's been no stuttering at all, and only 1 crash on launch. Nothing that's ever interrupted game play.

Final note, hunts are on a 50 minute timer, so you never have to wonder if you time to do something. If you have an hour, you have time to play.

    Anyway, here's a review.

There's been a performance patch since this review, BTW.

So this looks really good... but I have a few concerns that pertains to our community.
    • Is this a game we will still want to play in six months? Does the game have longevity in a way that is enjoyable?
    • Is this a game we should buy at release or wait for a sale?
    • Is this a game that has something for everybody? Is it just a looter like Diablo? Or are there other gameplay mechanics mixed in to keep things interesting long-term? Is the story any good? How does it compare to a game like WoW?
Some of these questions are answered in the video above, but I want to hear from members in our community as well.

Some thoughts and answers. In no particular order.

    - I will probably be playing this for a while. There are 14 categories of weapons to master and 100 sets of armor to craft. That by itself will keep me busy for a good amount of time. There are also event monsters. The last one on consoles was the Behemoth from Final Fantasy.

    - It was worth $60 to me, others may get different mileage. I will never tell you a game is worth it for someone else. I am encouraging people to play it, but I doubt it will be a "main" game around here. It's too focused and too niche. I'm having the most fun I've had with a new game in a LONG time.

    - Every mission is on a timer, so you know going in exactly how long something is going to take. Most hunts right now take me 10-20 minutes. The max is 50 minutes. There is also an untimed expedition mode where you can explore, gathers materials, etc.

    - It is not a conventional loot game. You can be very specific about what drops you go for. Need Barroth Tails? Go hunt a Barroth and cut its tail off, easy as that. Random drops are for rare materials, or charms and skill boosting items, not gear. You will usually know exactly what you need to make an item.

    - Every monster requires completely different tactics, equipment, items, and skills to fight effectively. They mean HUNTER. You cannot win by running in and button mashing. Beating the monsters requires research and prep work.

    - The story is meh so far, but some of the characters are fun. It's about 40-50 hours long from what I'm hearing, and most people are saying the "real" game starts when you finish it.

    - It does not compare to WoW. This is not an MMO. It uses 4 man groups, or solo, and you're focused on killing monsters or gathering resources. There are no raids, dungeons, etc. You track a monster, you kill it, that's it. There are side objectives and bounties to do along the way, but the focus here is on monster killing.

As always, my steam broadcast is set to friends can watch my games. You don't need to ask permission, just hop on if you see me playing.

I still have not got my PC set up, but I was thinking about picking this up. My only concern is I am not sure my system is going to be up to it. I have read that even higher end systems outside of a GTX 1080 TI and a high end CPU are struggling.

I have a Core i5-4670k and a GTX 970. Anyone playing have a similar setup?

I'm running at 60fps on a I7-7700, 980TI on high settings. I would guess you'd be okay on medium or low, but not sure about that processor. This game is pretty processor heavy

Turning off volumetric lighting jumps things up 10-15 fps by itself.

I rented it on the Xbox One, and so far it is pretty good. I picked up the charge blade, and by no means have I mastered it, but it is pretty interesting. I think I have the basic rotation down. Built Phials > dump phials into the shield > charge phials > Switch to axe and do the super duper elemental spin slam attack

Have not been able to get the sword charged though.

I am pretty sure I will pick this up on PC once I get my desk and PC set back up. I am curious what it is like later on down the road. So far I have not really fought anything that was terribly difficult. I have fought a Kulu-Ya-Ki, Pikei-Pukei and several Great Jagras'. I am sure those are pretty simple fights, and I have to assume they get harder. I have seen the Anjanath and ran away like a scared little boy.
