Well, long term it scratches a different itch for me. I like my French 74's as much as I like my Space Yachts. Some days I'll be flying in the Verse, other days I'll be on the blue waters. You probably feel that way because you're English, though.
Hm, need to do some research before putting down moolah. Has anyone already pre-ordered? If yes, how are you feeling about the devs progress so far and what they're promising in terms of expectations/reality?
Very seriously considering pre-ordering, if only because they've taken to SC-levels of community integration. Sometimes even deeper. I'm in contact with one "BrutishVulgarian" who's an alpha tester currently. The game is rock-solid, if a bit uninspired in the UI (though that will change fully before release). The realism is there, but without sucking the fun out of it - for instance, you can cross irons with a first rate just like they did in real life, but it doesn't take 10 to 15 minutes like in real life. You can fire a single cannon from a deck to range-find before releasing the broadside. High mounted guns get more range. Firing when you heel also gets more range than when ebbing. Rough seas force your lower gun-decks shut. Planned customizations are: customized gun load-outs (you have as many ports s you have, what you do with them is up to you), custom sail-plans and rigging, custom paint jobs, and a few extra things that will have more relevance to the Open World than combat. They are openly accepting well-modelled ships from the community, they ask the community what ships (within the timeframe) should be available, actually have the community generating content. Just browse here - check the amount of times the user "admin" joins in on a thread. It's staggering. Also, for the nations we can sail, here.
Yea, looks like a solid game. I'm real excited about it. I preordered. Looking forward to sailing the seven seas with you miscreants!
I'll probably drop down some, although as my computer is being shipped tomorrow as is all my other stuff (moving), I'll do it after I get it back in working order.
